88 Honda Accord dies when you put it in gear?
I have an 88 Honda Accord LX (fuel injected) that, when warmed up, dies as soon as you put it in gear. We've changed the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, cat. converter, etc. No luck! Does anyone have any experience with this?? Thanks!
I think the idle isn't high enough and once you engage the transmission it causes the engine to die.
When dealing with engine and car that old for sure it will have a problems with the electrical system , especially the charging system.
You've not mentioned giving it a full tune up or changing the gas filter either.
I believe if you give that car a real solid over haul it will fix that problem.
Try cleaning the battery , starter , alternator posts and connectors , plus the engine block ground and any plug in connectors , plus all grounds you see, don't forget to clean the connections on the ignition coil or distribitor cap etc too. Clean the sensor connections, plus either change or clean the spark plug wire connectors inside and clean and re-gap or replace the spark plugs.
The few things you need besides the basic tools are assorted wire brushes , fine sandpaper and a few flat headed screwdrivers to make the contacts shiny.
Plus change the fuel filter, air filter , and once you get it driveable I highly recommend changing the oil filter ,timing belt, flush the rad and transmission, check all the hoses , rad , clamps , air vac lines, over haul the fuel injectors and add gas treatment to clean the whole fuel system, plus spray the throttle body with throttle body cleaner.You might want to just replace the o2 sensors but at least clean their contacts.
Hope that helps and best of luck....by the way if you find real bad ground wires , just make up or replace the wires and try using new screws etc too.
