What type of bulb do I use in my floor lamp?
I have a floor lamp that has no switch hooked up though it did come with an optional in-line dimmer. It is plugged in to a switched outlet right now. For some reason, it will not work with any bulb I have tried except a 3-way CFL (12/23/29). I have tried other 3-way CFLs of different wattages as well as a variety of dimmable CFLs, 3-way incandescents, and normal incandescents but none seem to work at all. This seems like extremely odd behavior for a lamp and was hoping for a little guidance as to what would cause this behavior. Any ideas?
If it has an in-line dimmer on it, is the dimmer switch bad? Also check the bulb socket. Look for the center contact (or if it is three way, the two contacts). Unplug the lamp. If the contacts are spring loaded, take a small screwdriver or knife and lift each of them a bit to make better contact to the base of the bulb. Then try the bulbs again.
