All about Fluorescent lamp
Fluorescent lamp, fluorescent light tubes, fluorescent light bulbs and other quite popular sources of florescent lighting are getting quite popular with each passing day. These are designed to be energy efficient and environment friendly. These fluorescent lighting are used across the world, especially in commercial facilities. Though traditionally, these lighting systems were quite large and emitted only cooler colors, advanced technology has introduced smaller fluorescent lighting systems that produce warmer colored lightings.
These light bulbs and light tubes are increasingly becoming energy efficient and becoming more cost-effective and hence, their use has increased in the residential sector also. Since a fluorescent lamp and fixture costs more than any other traditional lighting bulb, many people avoid purchasing them. Apart from general lighting purposes, these lamps are also designed for decorative purposes. These decorative lamps produce different colors such as green, red, blue and other colors. These fluorescent lamps are available in different shapes and sizes. Commonly these are available as straight tube. These tubes may have one or two pins extending from each end. These fluorescent lights tubes are available in standard lengths and diameters. Most popular is the T12 lamps with a diameter as 1.5 inches. Though these straight-line tubes come up to 96 inches in length with 1.5 inch diameter, 48 inches tubes are most commonly used.
Other tube lights with shorter length have shorter diameters such as T8 with 1" diameter and T5 with 0.5" diameter. People are opting for T8 tubes in 36 and 48 inch length instead of T12 tubes.
To calculate the power consumed and light generated by a fluorescent light tube, its length and diameter are used. You can find a fluorescent lamp in a modularized shape also in which two or four light tubes are interconnected such as a single tube bent multiple times. These shapes are usually seen in smaller lamps that allow the lamp to detach from its base.
Whenever you buy fluorescent light bulbs or light tubes, read the details on its labels. Manufacturers always declare the amount of power consumed and the amount of light produced by the unit. can i use a two-pin electrical plug from small appliances bought in South Africa in the UK?
I have several domestic appliances (like coffee grinders, food mixers, lamps, etc) that come fitted with a two-pin plug (2.5A, 250 volts) that I bought in South Africa. The plug is not removable. I have now moved back to the UK and can't seem to find an adaptor. Can someone shed any light on this (no pun intended)?
Sounds like you need shaver adapters, they look like a standard UK plug but have a two pin socket on the back.
In the UK we use an isolating transformer in bathrooms to provide a 2 pin socket for electric shavers and rechargeable toothbrushes.
You get the adapters in most DIY stores, some suprmarkets, and the odd pound shop.
Ohterwise buy some UK plugs (About 50p each), a screwdriver, and a pair of cutters, cut of the two pin plug and wire on a UK plug. The red or brown wire goes to the fuse, the black or blue wire goes to the neutral pin, dont wire anything to the earth pin.
