Of Mice and Men- Building a USB Optical Mouse?
Hey there. I'm in the drafting stages of designing an USB Optical Mouse that looks similar to this one:

Now, I wanna put my own custom logo for my online multimedia group. I plan on using an old iPhone 3 sg as the bottom casing and a stainless steel top with a frosted plexiglass logo on it. I'm just wondering how to do it. It's going to be thin. I am also planning on having it plug in via a usb to usb mini cable so I need to change over the power supply to a USB mini female adapter. I want it to have a blue LED light inside to light up the logo. I was planning on gutting a Belkin Retractable USB Op. Mouse, but they don't have the LED on the inside. Can anyone help me out? Is there a company that allows people to create a custom Optical Mouse?
Sounds like a good idea for a project, your best bet i think would be to go on the hunt for second hand mice & find one that appears to have nice slim circuitry inside.
Youll also need;
A female mini-usb plug to mount on side of ipod casing.
Super bright leds are super cheap, you can get square ones which are easy to mount, then run it off the USB 5V power http://www.geocities.ws/k7hkl_arv/PC_USB_Connectors_Pinout.png
you can do things like lay capacitors on there side, remove scroll wheel & desolder scroll wheel attachments to make it thinner.
Drill hole at bottom for optical, mount it inside, cut your mouse buttons out of the case, shave a millimeter off the bottom of your mouse buttons so they have room to move down, mount the mouse keys to the top mouse body with some bendy steel brackets on the underside.
Youll probly run into a few issues though..
I don't think there is a website for custom made mice..
