Wireless Instanton

What is up with Mandriva? I don't fuck!ng get it....?

Did my install go wrong, or is this how the Mandriva InstantOn Linux thing really is? I can't right click the desktop, there's no Start Menu, wireless internet doesn't work, the sound doesn't work, I can't get Google Chrome to install, I don't know how to turn the touchpad off....I tried a different type of Linux earlier, it might've been called Gnome, and I thought it was pretty cool. Then I went on Google and saw that Mandriva has been called the best so far, but I think it's the stupidest thing ever. WTF?? Help!!!
Ok thanks, you guys rock. I'm new to a lot of this still, so I'm gonna ask a bit more. When I installed, the Disk Partitioning program or whatever came up and I directed 21 gbs to mandriva and had 30 left for windows. Is this a fairly good setup? And one last question: can you get the rotating desktop cube in Mandriva?

If you can't right-click on the desktop then your install went wrong -- badly wrong in fact. Linux drivers are usually pretty good but the rest of it (except the start menu -- maybe. I will get to that) sounds like one of those occasional hardware issue. First, if you know Gnome then you know that instead of a start button you have an applications menu on the upper left. For KDE XFCE4 and so forth -- well I'm looking at a Slackware Laptop with an XFCE desktop and a small mouse inside a blue X where the start button is on Windows. KDE has a similar item right there. IF you don't see either the menu or the button down there, REINSTALL IMMEDIATELY. Your installation is corrupt and you don't want to deal with it. I frankly recommend Fedora for machines which can run it or Mandriva, but that is your choice.

By the way, Linux is essentially a commodity version of UNIX. What that REALLY means is that if wireless doesn't work on a distro look up your wireless card (use lspci to get the name -- run it as root) and see what other people do to get it working -- google for it and your distro. Yahoo's search engine right now has a pro-Windows bias and you will find a lot about getting it working on Windows, which is not what you want.
